LASIK: How The Procedure is Done

LASIK in Los Angeles is a laser eye surgery that corrects nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness. If you believe you are a good candidate for LASIK, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the procedure. Here are the details so you can prepare yourself for your life-changing surgery!

LASIK is a pain-free procedure and takes only about 15 to 20 minutes for both eyes, although you will have to be in the laser suite for about two hours for some necessary preparations. Anesthetic drops will be given to numb your eyes, minimizing any discomfort that you may feel during the surgery. You may also have the option to choose a mild sedative which would take about 30 to 45 minutes to take effect. A two-step procedure is then performed, each stage using a different laser.

  • First step: The creation of the corneal flap.

The first procedure is to make a micro-thin, circular flap in the surface of the eye, the cornea. This is done by using a precise flap-making instrument which is either a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser. This computer-guided light-pulse technology is used to create a flap that remains attached by a hinge which allows the surgeon to easily access the corneal bed or the stroma.

  • Second step: Reshaping the cornea.

The second stage is to reshape the corneal bed with microscopic precision using the excimer laser. The high-power ultraviolet output of the laser permanently removes the microscopic pieces of tissue that affect the patient’s vision. The flap is then laid back into place and acts as a natural bandage to protect the reshaped portion of the cornea while it heals. No sutures are required.

After this procedure, you should return home accompanied by a friend or family member. Your vision can take a little bit of time to heal and become clearer. Definitely do not try driving alone after the surgery. Also, don’t forget to wear the given protective glasses and use the prescribed eye drops (antibiotics and steroids) once you get home. You can usually return to your regular daily activities the day after your surgery. Be sure to schedule a follow-up appointment to assess the changes in your vision.
